Fine Response to O. and G. Appeal
CHEQUE FOR £lOls HANDED TO DOMINION - ORGANISER According to the honorary organiser for the Dominion, Mr J. Oliver, of Auckland, Cambridge, on a compartive population basis is likely to finish up in third place for the whole of New Zealand, in the amount contributed to the nation-wide 0. & G. campaign.
When Mr Oliver met representatives of the 0. & G. Committee here last evening he was handed a cheque for £lOls/0/6. The cheque was handed over by the local organiser, Mr W. R. Edwards, in the unavoidable absence of Dr H. C. Tod, chairman of the local committee. Mr Edwards paid tribute to the people of Cambridge for their fine response and he thanked all who had worked for the campaign with special mention of the ladies’ section of the committee.
In his reply Mr Oliver said the receipt of the cheque that evening was one of the thrills in the cause oyer the past two years. He voiced a tribute of praise and gratitude. Cambridge’s effort was a wonderful one in one of the most important appeals to ever come before the people of New Zealand.
Mr Oliver said it was gratifying to himself and the National Committee to find so many friends throughout the country and their great cooperation. The assistance of the ladies, too, was worthy of the great'est measure of appreciation! . Mr Oliver thanked the people of Cambridge as a whole and all the workers for a great and noble cause. As far as he could ascertain,at the moment the fund totalled £BB,OOO with several districts still to come in. “When they do it will be found that Cambridge, on a population basis will be very high up, and from my own observation, might be among the first three. You have accomplished something that in the future will bring you a glorious harvest,” said Mr Oliver in conclusion.
NOW RUNNING ON,FULL SYSTEM^IDAD When enquiries we/e made at the Karapiro Hydro Station this morning it was stated that the No. 2 unit, which h/s been under test for several, da/s, had run all Say yesterday/ on/ full system load. The teslfcg/had been most satisfactory and the machine was still under inspection.
