SUNDAY OBSERVANCE

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I usually ignore correspondence which appears over a pseudonyn but in this instance I am a little curious as to who LETs “Christian Parent” is who is afraid to append his or her own name to an abusive letter which is aimed, at me. His or her reference to a “small town journalism” I take it is addressed to the “Independent” for it was your report, of a sermon that appeared and to which he or she is taking exception. If. on the other hand, it bears reference to my weekly articles in the “Star” and “Star-Sun” of Auckland and Christchurch respectively then I fail to see how “small town journalism” has anything tp do with the case.

Let me say to this unknown “Christian Parent,” who seems to be so lacking in a very important* Christian virtue, namely courage and charity, that at least I have openly said what I think on a very vital public topic. I know many will differ with me. That is inevitable, nor does that worry me in the least. What does worry me however is that there is in this town people so devoid of kindness and fair that they will aim at a public maii from behind the safe cover of a nom-de-plume and that, I repeat, is a most insulting and unchristian manner. I have tried to take what I believe is a common sense and decently broad view on a vital topic. Those who know me best will not agree with the “Christian Parent” who infers that 1 , over the years I have # failed to say exactly what I think in my own name at all times. Now then, “Christian Parent” come out from behind your safe cover and stand courageously behind your Christian convictions.—l am, etc., C. W. Chandler, Vicar of Cambridge.
