SPORTING NOTES

ON RACING AND TROTTING BRIEF ITEMS FROM THE TRACK © (B y “ Old Rowley ”) Promising Effort Having his first start as a hurdler in the Kopuarahi Hurdles at Paeroa, the "four-year-old Bulandshare —Artless gelding South Riding was ridden a patient race, and did not enter the picture until the closing stages, when lie began to show plenty of confidence. As hurdlers go, h e is young, and if persevered with should prove very useful, and a win may come his way sooner than many expect. Having Us On ? There ar e few deceivers, gay or otherwise, so convincing as Hayduk, for the Saleve Fiddledene gelding seems to run just well enough to keep his supporters hoping that they will one day collect a ‘ motza ” off him. However, credit must be given when due, and he ran quite a respectable race in the second division of the Taumarunui Stakes, and with Balgowan, Bruno Boy, and Kerry Lad ahead of him he was by no means disgraced. Maybe he is settling down and should be worth keeping an eye on at least. Looking Very Fit The five-year-old brown horse Foxstar looked in great heart when sent out to contest the second division of the Brenan Memorial Hack Handicap, and the manner in. which he shot out at barrier rise suggested that he would be hard to beat; but after leading for most of the journey he succumbed when the final furlong was entered, and could do no better than fourth. The point is that he is right back to form, and maybe the mile and, a quarter on a turning track under bad conditions did not help him to do full justice to himself, lie looks a logical sort to be in the money within his next start or two, and Tc' Aroha course should suit him provided the spell of fine weather keeps up. A Mile the Limit ? Viewed in the light of his most recent .efforts, it would seem that Colonel Dink’s limit is a utile, for with a smart beginning he has had every chance to carry on and win. but on each occasion has found the journey too long. Maybe on a good track he w'ould shape better, but lie cannot be considered a good proposition at ten furlongs or more at the present time.

Not Quite Ready Yet Broieform ran another good race on Saturday last, but had to be content with fourth placing in the Flying Handicap, open sprint, at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club races. How'ever, it was an encouraging effort, and the half-sister of Sweet Biscuit should win a race before long, provided the company isn’t too classy. Showing Form

By no means fashionably bred, and trained by his owner, who races him only spasmodically, nevertheless Jayquil (Jay—Marquil) has been racing well enough to attract attention, and his fourth in the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap at Paeroa was a good effort. He may win a race shortly, and certainly looks a good prospect to be in a place if he reproduces the form he showed last Saturday. Improved Effort Ranada, the five-year-old bay mar o by Hazrat —Etehi Rangi, showed improvement when raced at Paeroa last Saturday to finish sixth in the second division of the Taumarunui Stakes, and she should be remembered when looking through hack fields in the immediate future. Her form suggests that she may win a heat before the fields become too strong. Different Tactics Gay Lally was not allowed to race away when contesting the Poland Cup on Saturday, and, being inside a bunch, took the sharp turn into the straight much better than he did the previous week. However, the aged Whirlwind —Diversion gelding fared no better over the concluding stages, and in, occupying sixth position as the field passed the post he could be said to have occupied about the same place during the running of the whole race. It may pay to forget these efforts, for Gay Lally is looking very well, and if started at Te Aroha will no doubt find conditions more to his liking. Nice Performance

Lucky Loyal put up a, nice performance to win the Methven Cup at the Methven Trotting Club’s victory meeting last Saturday. Starting from 36 yards behind, with a limit of 4.36, the aged Grattan Royal—-Marie Potts gelding was clocked to win the two miles in 4m. 24 2-ss. In other words, he would have gone 4.21 2-5 s had he started from the limit, which is quite good time and shpws Lucky Loyal to be right back to form.
