• ; FENCOURT ITEMS * . « i TEACHER I-ARE WELLED l (Own Correspondent) Farewell functions have recently been tendered Miss Phyllis Nelson, assistant mistress of Goodwood School, who is leaving to take up a new position at Papatoetoe. * At an afternoon function arranged by Mrs A. J. Swayne, a large number of residents and children were present. Miss Nelson and her mother were presented . with shoulder sprays on their • arrival by two juniors, Jeanette Johnson and: June Plaw. During the function items were given by Mrs. Swayne, Mrs Muir, and Miss L. Bone. The chairman of the school committee, Mr R. Wattam, referred to the good service given to the school by Miss Nelson and extended best wishes on behalf of the district. A token of esteem was the gift of a week-end bag, the presentation being made by Ina Low. Miss Nelson suitably replied. Afternoon tea brought the function to a close. A delightful even- . .ing was also held by Mrs Swayne . et her residence when good wishes were extended to Miss Nelson. Women’s Institute. ""The August meeting of the Fenv ' court Women’s Institute was held recently in the local hall, Mrs C. P. Hill presiding over an attendance of 33 members. The meeting opened •with the singing of the ode. Invitations to a birthday party and letters of thanks from sons of members who had received parcels and letters of thanks from sons of from .the “institute were received. Members were reminded of the parcel packing day next week and also that the institute would be in charge of the Red Cross shops. Various members gave reports on the different birthday parties they' had attended. The subject of writing to English Women’s was brought up and the president read an extract from an English Women's Institute journal. The following members will be hostesses for next month: —Mesdames Cuff, R. Smith, Rutter, and Miss Vagg. The roll call: “A garment for the Polish refugees” was well answered and a large number of garments will be handed to the Red Cross. • Mrs Hill introduced Mrs Scobie, president of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, who addressed the meeting. She mainly % spoke on the Dominion Council a..meeting which she attended recently. Mrs. Scobie touched on many 1 subjects, including the Robert Young Cup, house-keeping scheme, • library of plays, and the allowing • of two women’s institute members to attend Massey College to study various branches of farming. Mrs. Scobie also cleared up a matter concerning ‘ a certain cigarette packet competition which appeared to have been a hoax. At the conclusion of her address Mrs Scobie was' presented with * a shoulder spray and a hearty vote . of thanks for her helpful talk was carried by acclamation. Competitions resulted as follows: Rock cakes, Mrs. Benge 1, Mrs. J. O’Keefe 2, Mrs. A. Jamieson 3; child’s feeder, Mrs W. Johnson 1, Mrs C. Hill 2, Mrs E. Tomsett 3; posy in an egg cup, Mrs E. Tomsett 1, Mrs G. Bartlett 2, Mrs Hubbard 3. - A dainty afternoon tea was served by Mesdames D. McMillan. S. Goodman, and G. Bartlett. S KARAPIRO HYDRO . SCOTCH INGLESIDE Recently a dance, which took the form of a Scotch ingleside, was held • in the Karapiro Hydro Y.M.C.A. Hall for the purpose of introducing Sie formation of a Caledonian ociety in that area. Those in charge of arrangements were the chairman, Mr Munroe; secretary, Mrs 1). Jamieson; treasurer, Mr R. Davis; committee, Mr and Mrs C. F. Bryan, Mr and Mrs D. Marshall, Misses G. Page, Mitchell, Kyle, and Jamieson. The chairman, secretary and treasurer were piped in by Mr I). Kiely, of Morrinsville Pipe Band. Dancing to a popular dance band was enjoyed by those present, and items were given between dances. Several National dances by Misses Dawn and Marlene Hooker and Yvonne Hollier proved very popular; also songs by three local boys, Jim Doyle, Eric Howie and Norman Penwarden; and solo by Benny Ropipa. Extras for the dances were played by Piper D. Kiely, Mesdames Davidson, Davis and Hollier. M’s.C. were Messrs H. M. Munroe and Doug. Jamieson. SCHOOL CONCERT (Own Correspondent) On Thursday evening the pupils of Tamahere School presented their annual concert to a crowded house • of parents and friends. The items /\ Aver e many and varied and reached b the high standard set by previous

concerts. The stage, which had been specially erected for the wings, and a painted forest scene occasion had 1 ingeniously contrived formed the background. This made an effective setting for the bright costumes of the children. Each item was warmly applauded by the apneeiatiVe audience. The chairman of the school committee, Mr J. Lee Hodgson, on behalf of the parents, congratulated the teachers and children on the success of their efforts. WHITEHALL WAY. FAREWELL TO TEACHER. The ladies of the Whitehall district gathered in the hall recently to give Miss F. Dalton a farewell party. Miss Dalton has been a popular teacher at the school and is to be transferred to Cheviot, in Canterbury. The pupils of the school were also present, and after the serving of a dainty afternoon tea,Mr W. G. Hulsc, on behalf of the school committee, paid a tribute to Miss Dalton’s work, both for the school, and the district, and asked her to accept a leather travelling bag. One of the tiny tots presented her with a shoulder spray. Miss Dalton suitably replied.
