AROUND THE BOROUGH

WITH THE WORKS COMMITTEE

A FULL REPORT

- The works committee presented a comprehensive report of its activities to the council at its meeting on Wednesday last, and put several recommendations to the council as follows. That the Lawnboy mower be offered for sale, and a new hand mower be purchased in its place. That Mr. McK. Jeffrey be asked to supervise the issuing of building and plumbing and drainage permits and that the borough foreman, Mr G. W. Amer, be appointed temporary borough' inspector, and an appropriate increase in salary be accorded him.

The committee after a close inspection of Thornton Road footpaths, decided that it would be possible to recondition the pavement in bitumen.

It was also suggested that St. Peter’s school be notified, that owing to shortage of labour, the council is unable to grant their request to undertake footpath tarring work at the school.

It was decided to notify the Cambridge Transport Co. to the effect that provided they construct a concrete footpath at the rear of their premises in Wilson St., the full width of their building, the council will provide a concrete channel for a similar length.

Also suggested that Mr! Horn Russo be given notice to demolish his building in Duke Street, recently partially destroyed by lire; that Mr A. Panettiere be .asked to enclose his vacant section in Duke Street with a suitable fence along the boundary of the street itself; and that Mr M. Matos be asked to remove all rubbish fro'iil his section in Duke Street east, and to generally tidy up the area. Another suggestion before the council was that a small committee be appointed to meet Mr McK. Jeffrey with the object of ascertaining from him the speediest means of making use of the No. 2 spring. It was also decided to sell the council’s model T Ford truck and motor roller.

Buses Ltd., Hamilton, arc to be notified that the two existing ’bus terminal points are to be done away with and that one terminal point only, in front of the Ambulance Station, in Victoria St. be the only arrival and departure point for Cambridge ’buses. The company is also to be notified that the town hall is to be the first outward ’bus stoj), and that the last inward stopping place for ’buses be also the town hall.

In view of the continual shade and dampness on Hamilton Road caused by the very high belt of trees on Mr R. Simpson’s property, the committee decided that lie be asked to cut the trees in question down to a height which would overcome the trouble referred to. The Anglican Church to be also asked to cut back the hedge on the corner of Bryce Street, and Hamilton Road, to a height in keeping with the Council’s Borough By-laws.
