LOYALTY OF FARMERS

FACTOR IN HUNTING DECISION TO CARRY ON In thanking the master (Mr Wynn Brown) and Miss Rhoda Brown for their hospitality at the opening meet of the Waikato Hunt on Saturday Mr A. J. Swayne /said il was pleasing to see such a representative gathering at the opening meet of the 1942 season. i It was a sure indication, he said, that the master and the Hunt Committee, in deciding to carry on the sport in spite of the war, had acted wisely and in the best interests of the members in an endeavour to keep up the morale of the community.

In reply; the master thanked Mr Swayne for his kind remarks. The decision to hunt or not to hunt iiad caused him quite a deal of mental worry. He was jealous of the goodwill of the farmers in the Waikato, who had been so loyal to him over a long period of years. He had made it his business to interview several land owners / who were in sympathy with the sport, and the consensus of opinion was that hunting should continue, care being taken not to offend Ihe feelings of those farmers who might have a different outlook on. the question. \

He thanked members and friends for turning out to the opening meet, especially those who had come from outside districts. How he was going to transport hounds to these outside districts’ was another problem confronting him.
