GOLF NOTES

THE CALDWELL CUP

A VALUABLE TROPHY

One of the most valuable trophies of the Cambridge Golf Club, the Caldwell Cup, is at, present being competed for by members for the 27th time. The cup was presented by file 4 late Mr D. R. Caldwell in 1915. Mr Caldwell was then a member of the club.

This year the best two out of three medal rounds on handicap will decide the winner. The first round was played on Saturday. At present leading are H. Jona'sson and S. Baker, who handed in cards of 69 net. This was Jonasson’s best effort of the season and earned him a two-stroke reduction in handicap to 13. S. Baker is proving one of the most consistent players in the club, having figured in numerous competitions this year. His handicap has been brought down two more to 11. A. H. Nicoll was the only other player to improve on his handicap. His round was 84—14 —70, and as a result his handicap is now 13. D. J. Lundori, C. K. Lowe and W. J. Ward each played to their handicaps, with 71 net. Others who may use their first round in selecting the best two out of three are: C. G. Vosper and K. L. Wilkinson, 72; V. C. Hollis, 73; R. H. Feisst and H. Clayton, 74. Holders of Cup The present holder of the cup is A. J. Law. Last year the competition was decided by match play, and Law defeated D. McCathie in the final, 2 and 1.

Previous winners of the Caldwell Cup are: 1915, J. A. Bryce; 1916, Dr Scannell; 1917, J. C. Sawers; 1918, M. Wells; 1919, A. H. Nicoll; 1920, J. Banks and N. Sutherland; 1921, S. Banks; 1922, A. G. Boyce; 1923, J. C. Sawers; 1924, F. Entwislc; 1925, V. Cornaga; 1926, H. Rowland; 1927, J. G. Ferguson; 1928, N. Gi Sutherland; 1929, Dr LI. C. Tod; 1930, A. E. Morrice; 1931, A. W. Nicoll; 1932, C. R. Haworth; 1933, R. Ingham; 1934, A. H. Clavton; 1935, J; Hannah; 1936, S. Holdgate; 1937, W. Wood; 1938, V. C. Hollis; 1939,"W. Rice; 1940, A. J. LaW. Condition of Links The Cambridge links are improving every week, and within a short time should reach their best. The greens have not been easy as a result of severe frosts and then heavy rain, but with warmer weather approaching a truer surface may be expected. The greens have never had a better growth of grass. The Te Awamutu visitors during the week-end were much impressed with the course. They commented freely on the fact that conditions were so dry after recent heavy rain. Tee at the Third This week the raised tee at the third hole has been in use, having been well turfed. This tee was built by the late Dr W. Stapley when the links were first formed. Present members may have wondered about a section, of motor-tyre nailed to the nearest electric pole in front of the hble.< This was attached in the earlier days by Commander R. W. Moorhouse, whose ball hit the pole on one occasion and bounced back dangerously. An Old, Old Story A' good example of what happens to most golfers, occurred at Cambridge during the week-end. A player took part in an inter-club match with Te Awamutu, but could not strike form and became absolutely disgusted with himself and the game.

He struggled round in the morning, duffing, hooking and slicing, but prepared to play better in the afternoon. However, his game did not improve, and towards the end of the round he declared emphatically that he would have to give the game up. He prophesied that he would not be seen on the links again. On the 16th tee, his opponent suggested kindly to himi that he l might do better if he slowed down his back-swing and made sure that the club head did not get outside the line. The result was astounding. His drive was one of the best he had ever hit, and he followed it up with an equally good iron to the green. He slipped a little at the 17th, but again hit beautiful shots at the 18th, so that now, insead of having a set of clubs for sale, next' week-end and more golf cannot come quickly enough for him.
