SATURDAY February 10— A British destroyer sank two U-boats which were attacking a convoy. *X : *K* The Air Minister, Sir Kingsley Wood, announced that orders had been placed for £6,000,000 worth of aircraft from Canada. * * In a further German air raid off the East Coast of England two patrol trawlers, the H. Robert Bowen and the Fort Royal, were sunk. Several freighters were damaged, but reached port. One German plane was shot dbwn, and two others were damaged. • The British steamer Chagres, of 5406 tons, sank after an enemy • attack off the North-west Coast. * * # A serious encounter took place on the Western Front, when losses were incurred by both French and Germans. * * * President Roosevelt announced that he was sending Mr Sumner Welles, Assistant Secretary of State to Europe for a personal survey of conditions in Italy, Germany, Britain and France. SUNDAY February 11 — The Russians continued to pound the Finnish, line, but the Finns claimed that they had not yielded a yard. * * * Little activity reported on the Western Front where all the lines were freezing hard. * * * The Finns retained the entire length of the Mannerheim Line in spite of continued pressure by Russian mechanised columns: MONDAY ; February 12— ~ V The first echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and men of the Australian Imperial Force arrived in Egypt.
