TE POI BOY SCOUT

NAVAL COMMISSION WON lan Harray, son of Mr and Mrs J. Harray, of Te Poi, is now serving as a sub-lieutenant on. H.M.S. Guardian in the North Sea. Harray, who is a former, Te Poi Boy Scout, is the first New Zealander to win commissioned rank from the lower deck solely by his own efforts. Some years ago an arrangement was made by the Government to pay the college and other expenses of any New Zealand able seaman thought suitable for a commission, and he is the first to be so trained. After a year’s study at Greenwich and Portsmouth Naval Colleges, he secured his commission shortly before war broke out.
