Appearance of Mushrooms.—The heavy rain of the last two weeks has resulted in mushrooms making their appearance in the Cambridge district. Odd mushrooms have been seen on. poor country for some time and now' they are becoming more plentiful.

Stockings Too Hot.—The unsuitability of high school girls wearing long woollen stockings during the summer months was discussed at last night's meeting of the Cambridge School Committee, and it was decided to recommend to the teaching staff that the girls be allowed to wear short tennis socks if they desired.

Children's Thoughts on War.— Three hundred thousand German school children are to receive free "war diaries." In these books they are told to write down their thoughts and experiences. There is also a pocket for keeping newspaper cuttings and pictures. After the war "valuable prizes" will be awarded for the best-kept diaries.

School Committees Praised.—The old idea that to be a member of a school committee was one of the lowest forms of public service had long since gone by the board, said Mr A. N. Macky, ward representative of the Auckland Education Board, when speaking at the opening of tlie Maungatautari No. 2 School on Saturday.
