TROTTING

TWO CAMBRIDGE WINNERS UENUKU AND BOLD VENTURE Mr R. A. McMillan, of Tamahere, a member of a well-known Cambridge trotting family, gained a popular victory in the Adams Memorial Handicap, the chief event on the Auckland Trotting Club’s programme on Saturday, when he drove his four-year-old gelding Uenuku to an easy victory. Uenuku who is trained by Mr McMillan was favourite on the win machine. Cambridge gained further success when Mr G. T. Mitchell scored an easy win with Bold Venture, in the Marconi Handicap, while Our Jewel, from the same stable was second in the Holson Handicap. It was surprising that Elliotvale was at double-figure odds to win the Winter Handicap for trotters. He had shown considerable promise without winning, and on Saturday came home four lengths clear of Sir Tony, with Ihi lhi two lengths further back in third place. The Cambridge owned, and trained Great Guy was fourth and Glen Bingen fifth. The odds-on favb'ui'ite Josedale Grattan won the first division of the Mangere Handicap with e&se, but his supporters were concerned when Television drew out 20 lengths clear. In the last half-mile Television compounded and Josedale Grattan went on to lead past the post, three lengths ahead of Kewpie’s Bingen, f with Northern Smile third and Tsana fourth. The favourite, Double Peter, also won the second division from. Clay Pot and Josette, with Belfast Jack, Gipsy Light and Maratua next. The winners in each division.. should quickly reach a tighter class. The largest dividend of the day was paid by Hillcrest, the 11th favourite in. the Hobson Handicap. Our Jewel was well placed throughout, but could not respond to an effort asked of him in the straight and had to be content with second place. Amyiom was third and Artist’s Gem fourth. Uenuku hit the front early in the Adams Memorial Handicap, and 'was not troubled to stall off ehallengths from Sandusky and Kenworthy, who filled the minor places. The pace of the leaders tired the field and Fernbrook Lass came home fast to get fourth place. Maintaining a forward position throughout Bold Venture won the Marconi Handicap easily from Francisco and Three Bells, who have recently come from the south. Munga Tangi was fourth, but the favourite, Tinker, never became prominent.

Two trotters, Great Surprise and Gay Moko, had the Stewards’ Handicap to themselves, drawing Well clear of the rest of the field. The former had a little in reserve, and he had the measure of Gay Moko in the straight..,. Llanyabon was third, just getting’up tp beat Decoy Bird for that position.' . In the concluding event, Red Flush fought out an exciting finish with Parauri, to get ,the verdict by a neck.. Eighteen Carat was two lengths away third and Loyal Direct, for fourth.

; The totalisator handled £45,139, compared with £33,388 10/- on the first day last year, an increase of £11,750 10/-. w
