The Waikato Independent TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 1938. NEWS IN A NUTSHELL

Bardowie Golf Club. —The annual meeting of the Bardowie Golf Club will be held this evening. Plans of New School. —The plans of the proposed new intermediate and secondary school for Cambridge are at present on view in the window of the Waikato Independent office.

From Germany.—A leter posted in Magdeburg, Germany, five weeks ago was addressed “The Waikato Independent, Publish, Auckland (Austraiien New Zealand).” In spite of the vagueness of the inscription, it reached its destination.

Weight Guessing at Show.—No person guessed the correct weight of the sheep at the show (1751b5), but Mrs A. Macdonald was the nearest with 1791bs and she won the prize. Mr J. D. Fell, of Pukekura, was second- with 1811bs. The pig weighed 1041bs and this weight was estimated by Mr J. H. Hicks, of Maungatnutari, and Mr W. P. Sexton, ol' Pukeroro, who shared the prize. Eczema in Sheep. Several outbreaks of facial eczema have occurred in Waikato flocks, and some lines of sheep submitted for auction at recent fairs have been slightly affected with the disease. Recent conditions have been favourable to the disease, but as the dry spell has been shorter this season it is not expected that the trouble will assume serious proportions. White Butterflies. The record number of white butterflies received by the Napier Borough Council authorities in one parcel arrived last Friday from Onga Onga. The parcel contained 4460 insects; but unfortunately for the collector it arrived after the bonus fund had been exhausted and he will get nothing for his trouble. Had they arrived earlier in the week they would have been worth nearly £4 10/- to him.

Semi-Nudism Enforced. —With his nether garments burning, and no means handy to extinguish them, one worker involved in the fire at the Ohinemuri County Council shack in the Karangahake Gorge the other day restored to the only expedient left—he removed the burning trousers and beat out the flames with his boots. His unclad appearance provoked humour which relieved the tension among the injured men.
