FARMERS' UNION

THE MONTHLY MEETING

CARRIERS' CHARGES DISCUSSED

The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Farmers' Buildings last night, when the president, Mr F. Griffin, presided over a small attendance.

A deputation from the Cambridge District Carriers' Association, comprising Messrs A. J. S. Richardson (president), W. J. Halliday, J. R. James and J. D. Clemow (secretary) attended the meeting by invitation to discuss the new list of carriers' charges. Mr Griftin welcomed the members of the Carriers' Association and hoped that a reasonable settlement of differences would result.

It was decided that the Cambridge Branch of the Farmers' Union circularise all branches upon the question of the classification of roads. It was suggested that local councils should be requested to raise the classification of class IV. roads from 4£ tons to. 5 tons, as this would result in an appreciable lowering of transport charges. An amicable discussion ensued on the list of charges. The Carriers' Association were prepared to cooperate with the Farmers' Union and meet them as far as possible. It was resolved that the Carriers' Association be thanked for their visit and co-operation; which would undoubtedly prove of great benefit to farmers.

The revised list of charges was ,quite reasonable and the meeting appreciated the way in which the Carriers' Association was willing to meet the farmers.
