LABOUR SHORTAGE

FARM HAND'S STATEMENT TRIED TO GET WORK Comments on. the shortage of farm labour were made in' the Gore Magistrate's Court this week by a judgment debtor and the magistrate, Mr W. H. Freeman. A single man who appeared as a judgment debtor stated that during the past 14 months he had earned £SO. He had recently , gone south from the North Island, "having endeavoured to follow the harvesting season through the different provinces, but he had been unsuccessful in making payable wages on account of the broken weather. He Had had several jobs in Southland since his arrival Jtnd, on one, he had earned £4 for three week's work.

"Have you tried to get work on a farm?" asked the magistrate. "I hear farmers throughout the country are saying they cannot get men." The debtor Said that he had made repeated efforts tO/ secure farm work without success.^"Then it is all humbug?" asked the magistrate. "Yes," replied the debtor. "That is what I thought," commented the magistrate. •
