THE POST OFFICE

AN IMPORTANT SERVICE GREATLY INCREASED BUSINESS The fact that the Post and Telegraph Department was the most important of all public services was mentioned by Mr S. Lewis during a farewell on Thursday to Mr W. Drake, who retired from the position of postmaster in January. "Although we are apt to criticise the Post Office at times, and particularly the exchange, I think we will all agree that it is providing a wonderful service," said Mr Lewis. In paying a tribute to Mr Drake, he referred to the increased duties of the staffs, owing to the many new departments that had been opened. Further to this, Mr Drake gave figures to show the remarkable growth of business handled at the Cambridge Post Office. He said that when he came to Cambridge three years ago there were 300 radio sets registered in the district. This year the number had increased to 700, or almost half the total number of 1600 householders in the Cambridge postal district. "A few years ago it was never thought that motor-cars would be registered," said Mr Drake, "but new the Cambridge Post Office has 1200 car registrations to deal with." The number of rural mail boxes is now over 500.
