SCHOOLS RE-OPEN

IN CAMBRIDGE DISTRICT . A ftß ANGEMENTS FOR YEA KAfter six weeks' vacation, schools in the Cambridge district re-opened this morning and the children all appear benefitted by the long holiday. The first day is always one of organisation, when rolls are made out and new pupils received and appointed to their respective classes. When interviewed this morning, the headmaster,Mr J. G. Catran, stated that at the primary school 25 new pupils had been enrolled to replace the 40 who left at the end of last year, but there were still a number expected. The roll at present is estimated at 350. Mr Catran said many parents did not understand that any child who will be six before May 31 must be enrolled this month, otherwise the child cannot be admitted until the beginning of the second term. When questioned concerning the closing of schools in the afternoons during the hot weather, Mr Catran said he had had no notification from the Education Board on the subject. In the past it had always been left to the discretion of headmasters, with power to close down if the heat was likely to affect the health of the children. The school staffs are the same as last year and consist of Mr J. G. Catran (headmaster); primary department: Standard 6, Mr W. A. McKenzie; .Standard 5, Mr T. P. Kerr; Standard 4, Miss E.V. McKenzie;. Standard 3, Mr J. T. Paul; Standard 2, Miss S. Dunn; Standard 1, Miss B. Griffith; Primer 8, Miss C. E. Doel; infant mistress, Miss K. Woulffe. Secondary department: Forms V and VI, Mr P. S. Merrick, B.A. (senior assistant); Form IV, Mr H.. N. Freeman, 8.A.; Form 111, Miss E. C. Lawes. M.A; Form 1118, Miss ■E. H. Blackburn. The Bible in Schools training will recommence on Wednesday morning, February 15, from 9 a.m. to 9.30 am this year all the Protestant ministers will assist. The manual training school will open next week and it is probable that the instructor, Mr dittos, will be kept at Cambridge on full-time. Last year the Roto-o-rangi school desired to take the manual course but the matter was held over. Now- that additional homecraft and agricultural courses are ■ being taken at the High School it is quite likely that the manual school will be used full-time this year and several country schools given an opportunity to take the courses offered.
