WHITIORA V. CAMBRIDGE MATCH FOE GWYNNE SHIELD The Gwynne Memorial Eugby Shield match between Whitiora and Cambridge Primary School was played on Victoria Square on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a good gothcring of spectators. The gtimo was very evenly and cleanly contested and each side stuck grimly to its task until the final whistle, although neither team has played a match since the August holidays. Whitiora fielded a uniformly heavy team and were thus enabled to obtain the ball from the majority of the set scrums, but their backs were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. Cambridge found itself compelled to field a much lighter team than that which won the shield from Morrinsviilc, but in spite of this put up a good performance, and were more than a match for their opponents in the open and loose play. A few minutes after the start L. Kelly scored a try for Cambridge well out, but although the kick at goal was a good one Cambridge failed to convert. Whitiora, using their weight, then took a hand, and after a penalty goal by Eobson, tries were scored in quick succession by Cross and Gall, one being converted by Eobson, and the first spell ended Whitiora 11, Cambridge 3. In the second spell Cambridge played with more dash and held Whitiora in their own half for most of the time. Again and again they stormed Whitiora’s goal line, but were unlucky. Then L, Kelly secured possession and after sprinting fully 60 yards scored a splendid try well out, which was unconverted. Further unsuccessful attacks were made on the enemy’s line, but the defence held good and Whitiora ran out the victors by 11 to 6. The visitors were then provided with afternoon tea, after which the shield was presented to the captain of tho Whitiora team. The game was ably controlled by Mr Scott, and Mr Entwistle lent valuable assistance.
