NECESSITY FOR TRIMMING

l STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR With regard-to the Jubilee Gardens the trees mentioned by “ Picardy” are considered too big for this ornamental plot in the centre of the town, which it is desired to have more open, particularly in view of the erection of the clock tower, the Mayor, Mr C. H. Priestley, stated this morning. It is the intention of the council ultimately to replace the larger trees in the Jubilee Gardens with shrubs. Regarding the trimming of trees on the other side of tho road the Mayor said that these trees were in a very bad state with moss and dead branches, and tho apparently drastic cutting back of the branches had been done to save the trees, whicji were in danger of dying out altogether. It has been recommended that the remaining Lawsoniana in the. 1 Jubilee Gardens should also be removed, as since the clock tower has been built, it tends further to obscure the view of drivers coming dow r n Victoria Street, of traffic crossing the main road from Alpha Street.
