LITERARY COMPETITIONS
PORTNIGHT TO CLOSING DAY ADULTS AND CHILDREN'S ENTRIES Only a fortnight now remains for intending entrants in The Independent's Annual Literary Competitions to send in their essays and stories, which must reach the Editor by Monday, Ist October. To give district school children a better chance to prepare their entries than they have had in previous years when tho competition coincided with the busy examination period, it was decided this year to advance the opening and closing dates by about two months. The winning stories and essays will bo published as before in a Special Christmas Issue of The Independent in December.
Tho high literary standard of the work in both children's and adults' sections has been freely commented on in tho past, and last year an unsolicited tribute was received from a metropolitan journal, which has run similar competitions, comparing the work of Cambridge writers more than favourably with those in the city concerned. Apart from the honour of being placed first in a section of the competition/ there are valuable prizes to be won. Full details will bo found on Page 3 of this issue.
