LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The monthly meeting of the Waikato Comity Council is being held to-day.
■ The monthly. meeting of the Leamington Town Board will be held on Thursday. The monthly sitting of the local Magistrate's Court will be held on Thursday. A cable from India to-day advises that the famous Shwedagn pagoda in Eangoon was badly damaged by fire. Extensive fires nave been burning in the swamp areas between Te Awaniutu and Frankton during the past day or two. Many miles of country are covered with a thick pall of smoke. No doubt the fires will smoulder in the peat for a considerable time, as is common at this time of the vcar.
