AT THE SHOW

WELL ARRANGED FIXTURE CREDIT TO THE OFFICIALS. With its many and varied attractions the success of any agricultural and pastoral show depends very largely upon the management and, of course, those responsible for it. Cambridge is fortunate in having a band of old faithfuls, who year after year, give of their experienced services. Again this year we have them with us, together 'with a few new men, who arc also doing their utmost to ensure that careful organisation which provides?, for the smooth-running of a show. r Thanks to the efficient management of this year’s executive, stewards and other officials, the proceedings yesterday and again to-day have gone along "smoothly. There hace, of course, been one or two slight hitches, but they have soon been overcome and there has been little left to be desired in the matter of management. The arrangements are much upon the same lines as in previous years,, the judging being carried out in the rings on the western side of the totaiisator house and in front of the loose boxes, which once again served the purpose admirably as pens for the cattle. An improvement this year was a more generous supply of water, which is appreciated, likewise the plentiful supply of hot water. The latter is particularly appreciated by farmers and others who prefer to provide their luncheon and afternoon tea. Side-show Alley. In its accustomed place at the back of the grandstand and extending along to the totaiisator house is side-show alley, a veritable little canvas town. To-day the stall-holders are doing better business than yesterday. It is here that hundreds of young people, and no doubt, many adults, who, perforce from their callings, have not the same interest in cattle and horses as others, will find an afternoon’s amusement today. It is here that the children will see many a last penny, and the older ones, - many a “saxpence go bang” in an effort to win a box of chocolates, by getting the highest number with a dart, or rolling a small ball through a, hole, but most of them will go home happy and contented after their day at the show. A Disappointing Feature. There arc quite a number of features that arc most pleasing about this years’ show, but one that is very disappointing is the small number of trade displays. We know full well that times are hard and that overhead is the big consideration in business to-day, but. these arc the times when even’ more advertising must be indulged in, and it must be appreciated that the displays at the annual shows • are good mediums. It is to be hoped that when the show comes round again next year, there will bo a better display than is the case at the present fixture. The Officials. In a merited tribute to the show officials first mention must, of course, be made of the genial president, Mr John

S. Fisher. Yesterday and again to-day the president is here, there and everywhere. Once again the success of the show is in large measure due to his. untiring efforts. It is only natural that where a function requires much organisation, a large proportion of the initial work falls upon the secretary, and especially is’this so with agricultural shows. The Waikato Central Agricultural Association is fortunate in having as its secretary, -Mr Edgar James. This unassuming gentleman has a great capacity for organising and this is again exemplified in this year’s show. He has done his arduous job with efficiency, and what is more pleasing,' ho has had a kindly greeting for visitors, and everyone else who conies his way, no matter how busy lie may have been. The many other stewards and officials are as keen as ever about their jobs, and the association is fortunate in having their services. ’Besides the president and secretary, other officials are as follows: —Vicepresidents, Messrs 11. Crowthcr and G. Harris; executive committee: Messrs J. S. Fisher, G. Harris, T. A. Hicks, G. M. Watt, 11. Crowthcr, S. N. Ziman, R. Wattam, W. C. Wallace, C. H. Cooper, H. P. Hewitt, J. T. Entwislo, C. H. Hargreaves, A. Entwislc, A. E. Peppercorn, C. R. Doan, G. Lambie, R. D. Fisher, H. A. Watkins and R, Webber.
