THE FESTIVE SEASON

CLOSE AT HAND. ,y GIFT SHOPPING COMMENCED. Early festive season shopping was apparent yesterday in the increased number of residents about the town, especially last evening. The business people report a very satisfactory day, especially those dealing extensively in gift goods.

After one of the business periods experienced for a very long time, there has been a considerable brightening during the last couple or weeks which will no doubt be accentuated as Christmas approaches. When times arc bad, and the producers are. affected, of course the business people in a primary producing district like Cambridge immediately feel the pinch, and there is no attempt to deny that the local shopkeepers have been up against it during the past year, and more especially during the current dairying season with values for Dominion dairy produce at a very low ebb. Notwithstanding this fact the employers have been loyal to their employees and for the most part have carried all .along. Their faith in their town and district has not been shaken, and so with the approach of another Christmas and New Year, we find them ready to serve the people with splendid and varied stocks pf seasonable goods. An inspection of the various shops and their window displays indicates that these remarks are no mere platitudes. In gift goods there is a more comprehensive display than ever, while the same applies to all festive and summer season's requirements. We are satisfied the shop-keepers have made every possible provision and that there is no occasion for district residents to go beyond their own centre for their wants. It is to be hoped the busiuess people will be supported in generous measure and that money available for Christmas shopping will be spent Avithin) the district. We do not intend to enlarge ,iypon the wisdom of spending one*s,,money,in one's own town, for it is obyious.i; Remember what Abraham Lincoln R you spend a dollar iivyoiu' own town you have the goods and the dollar too in the community; but when you send your dollar aAvay, you may get the goods, but :hc dollar is no longer with you." Let your motto this Christmas be: "Shop in Cambridge." The business people arc deserving of it, for they do their share to assist the town and district along all the year, whereas the outsider has no other interest in us than the securing of our good cash. A Good Sign. It is a very satisfactory sign to notice that several new businessess have lately been opened up in the town. In the majority of towns it is a case of empty shops going a-beggiug, and it seems that the generally recognised solid -nature of Cambridge as a centre and district is becoming better known, not only in the Province, but even further afield.
