CALF SKINS
DAMAGE BY BARBED WIRE. EXCELLENT LEATHER. At the Cambridge meeting of farmers yesterday, Mr S. Lye (chairman of the Auckland branch of the Dominion Farm Products Co-op. Federation) exhibited a tanned calf skin that had been returned to his company by the importers (an American firm), as an example of what farmers should guard against. This skin had been converted into a beautiful bit of calf-skin leather but the whole hide was 'completely spoilt by deep cuts made by barbedwire, the calf having evidently been tied to a barbed-wire fence.
Mr Lye also has a number of samples .of very beautiful leather of vai-i----ous grades, including lovely suedes, Velvetta, Tuscan, Russian calf, etc., all made from calf-skins purchased from the N.Z. farmers organisation. The finished articles show what a high-grade article can be made from calf-skins, and Mr Lye informs us that he has had reports that our skins are unexcelled in any part of the world.
