FIENDISH OUTRAGE.
BOMB UNDER MAN'S BED. Awakened shortly before midnight one night lately by a noise, Hans Mortensen, a Melbourne watchman, aged 60 years, escaped from his hut near a railway bridge only a few seconds before a bomb exploded under his bed. One end of the hut was blown out, and the bed was hurled against the opposite wall. Intimidation i* believed to be the motive for the outray •.
On February 2 harness worth £22 was stolen from a shed adjoining the hut. The harness was the property of Mr G. W. Vanghan, cartage contractor. To prevent further thefts Mr Vaughan engaged Mortensen. as a night-watchman. It is believed that the bomb was placed in the hut by the
thieves who stole the harness. An examination of the hut showed that the offenders had wrenched a piece of tin away from the end of the wall while Mortenson was asleep, lighted the fuse, and pushed th«- bomb under Ihe head of the bed.
