MOTOR ACCIDENT

SERVICE CAR SOMERSAULTS BRIDAL COUPLE/S EXPERIENCES. A serious accident occurred on the main Cambridge-Tirau road, at the first bad bend past the Karapiro factory, on Wednesday night last. It is understood that the car did not negotiate the bend but crashed over the road-side, through some small trees and over a bank, somersaulting end over end before it came to rest some forty to fifty feet below. There were eight passengers in the car. Mr Frederick John Evans, aged 37, of Gisborne, and Mrs Kate Howe, aged 64, of Rotorua, sustained injuries to the bac. Michael Evans, son of Mr Evans, received injuries to the head. These three were taken to the Waikato Hospital. Mr and Mrs Selwyn Germann, who were, on their honeymoon, having only been married that day, escaped with, shock. Mrs Gcrmann is a daughter of Mr F. Cunningham, of Kaipaki. The other occupants escaped unhurt. Under the circumstances it is exceedingly fortunate that the accident was not attended with more serious results. The car,was badly damaged. -

An X-ray examination at the hospital showed that Mr Evans and Mrs Howe are both suffering from injuries to the spine. Their condition is not considered serious.

Mr Fulton Cunningham, of Kaipaki, father of Mrs Germann, writes us stating that the report of the accident appearing in another paper was not correct. The road at the spot, he says, was in perfect order, and the Matamata County Council should not be blamed for the accident. Our correspondent also complains that the police did not make fuller enquiries into the accident, stating that though Mr and Mrs Germann remained at Cambridge two days after the accident, they were not questioned by the police. Mr ningham adds that the car craskq|!| through some trees, leapt over a bahjsf eight feet, somersaulted three, times, and came to rest fifty feet below, the toad, and it was marvellous that there were no fatalities.
