EXCEL S.

CREDIT TO OFFICIALS. The general arrangements marie for the opening day were excellent. For many weeks the show executive, especially the president, Mr J. S. Fisher, and secretary, Mr Edgar James, had worked very hard arranging the multifarious details, and in consequence yesterday everything went along smoothly, while the same applies to to-day’s proceedings. The arrangements for the exhibition and judging of cattle and horses are much the same as in previous years, the cattle rings being grouped about the outer ■ enclosure of the/racecourse. On the show executive most of the old hands arc again faithfully carrying out their duties together with a leavening of fresh stewards. The popular president, Mr J. S. Fisher, is here, there and everywhere, and again this year the great success of the fixture is due in a great- measure to his untiring efforts. The association is also fortunate in having such a gentleman as Mr Edgar James as secretary. Characteristic of him, he has once again done his arduous job of organisation with efficiency and faithful attention to detail: He is eyer a courteous, obliging official, and is popular with everyone, a factor # t.hat constitutes a considerable quota of the success of the annual .shows. Design for Border. —St. 6:Marion Sutcliffe 1, Audrey Savory 2; both Cambridge. - Reporting on the school work the judge, Rev. C. W. Clark, said the work is uniformly good and shows care and attention to detail. As only two schools are represented competition is not so keen as in former years. It is to be. regretted that more schools- do not compete, as work of this nature must be of general benefit to most pupils. . Writing shows a marked improvement on that of former years. I am pleased to. see that the unduly wide spacing of words has almost disappeared.

Map drawing is also very much improved and is quite creditable work. Projection of lines of latitude and longtitude would assist to greater accuracy. As quick methods of fairly accurate projecting are not unknown, one wonders why they are not used. Wrongly spelled words ware noticed, on some maps and also in the writing. This was not taken into consideration, but it should not occur in copied work. Colour work generally shows taste, care and observation, creditable alike to both pupils and teachers. Only two specimens of pen and ink drawing were entered and both are excellently done. Both the competing schools are to be congratulated on the general good quality of the work shown. SCHOOL GARDENS. The results for the school j gardens Competition this season arc as follows: Leamington: First inspection, 42 points; second inspection, 39; total, 81 per cent. Kaipaki: 47, 32; total, 79. Hautapu: 44, 30 —74. Goodwood: 42, 29 —71. Roto-o-rangi: 39, 29—-68. Other schools less than 60 per cent. The Agricultural Instructor, Mr M. H. Dixon, said he was pleased to report that there is much closer competition among the schools. Unfortunately depredations amongst the scholars’ gardens during the summer holidays made it impossible for me to include Cambridge school in this year’s competition.
