FAREWELL TO MR E. VEALE. / J* PUBLIC RECOGNITION. A public meeting, convened by the Deputy Mayor (Mr W. G. Care), was held at the Cambridge Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, when Mr W. G. Care presided over a large and representative gathering of promineijt ladies and men. Apologies for non-attendance W6ro also received from quite a number of absentees. The convener stated that Mr Veale was so well-known, and had done so much for the town and district that there was no need for him to say howmuch lie had done. Ho felt that it was the right thing make some public recognition of Mr Veale’s services, on the occasion of his departure from Cambridge. Several of those present commended the Deputy Mayor on the action he had taken, and all felt that something should be done. After discussion it was unanimously, resolved to invito public subscriptions towards a presentation to Mr Veale (to take the form of., a cheque). ; -^5 It was resolved to make the prescn-T tation at a function to be held at the Town Hall on Friday afternoon next-. The ladies present (Mesdames W. G,. Care, W. J. Ward, G. B. Simpson, E. N. Soutcr, E. Hardy, C. Meredith, A. W. Gane, M. Wells and Miss Willis), appointed a ladies ’ committee, with ' power to add to their number (Mrs Care to be convener), to make arrangements for the afternoon tea".

The following were appointed to ,r&4 ceivc public subscriptions towards thepresentation, viz., Messrs J>S. Fisher, H. Speight, W. G. Care, W. Munroc, Alf Gane (treasurer), T. W. . Robinson (Roto-o-pngi), W. Perkins (Pukekura), T. A. Hicks (Leamington), M. Butler (PukerOro), F* H. Anderson (Hautapu), and the Waikato Independent. The presentation will be made by the Mayor, or, failing him, the Deputy Mayor, he to be the only speaker. The matter is being taken yp enthusiastically, Mr Veale having been one of the most enterprising and valuable local residents for a great many years past.

SOCIAL AT FENCOURT.

FAREWELL TO MR R. A. S. BROWN

Last Friday evening the residents of Foncourt assembled at the Goodwood' 4 ' School to bid farewell to the headmaster, Mr B. A. S. Brown, who is retiring from teaching. Dancing was indulged in by young and old, the Monte Carlo waltz being won by Miss M. Burns and partner. ‘ During the evening the chairman of the School Committee (Mr R. Wattam) spuke of Mr Brown’s excellent work while at>-.thc school, and expressed regret at his departure. In closing, he asked Mr Brown to accppt, on behalf of the residents, a wristlet watch and a book of Wordsworth’s poems. In a short speech, Mr Brown suitably repliel.

A dainty 'supper was handed roundby the ladies, and at the Conclusion of the evening all joined in singing 1 ‘ Auld Lang Syne,” and gave three hearty cheers for Mr Brown.
