TE KOUTU PARK

BIG IMPBOVEMENT SCHEME. PRELIMINARY SURVEY. Ib furtherance of the "proposal of the chairman of the Cambridge Domain Board (Mr S. Lewis) to decide upon some definite form of improvement of Te Koutu Park, a preliminary survey is being made of tho suggested work. On Tuesday last through the courtesy of the Auckland Racing Club, Mr Albert Hill, manager of the Ellerslie racecourse and the magnificent gardens arid appointments there, paid a visit to Cambridge, and made a very careful inspection of the Park, with a view to preparing a definite plan of improvement and beautification. Mr Hill, who. has been to Cambridge on several occasions previously, is greatly impressed with the possibilities presented by the Domain grounds, and assured Mr Lewis that it would be possible to make it a magnificent Park—one of finest in the Dominion —though, of course, a goodly sum of money will be required for the very extensive improvements that Mr Hill has in view.

It is impossible at present to give any idea of the suggested improvement scheme, but there is no doubt that one feature will be the provision of a motor drive right round the lake, on the low level. Mr Hill, we understand, will undertake the preparation of a. complete improvement scheme, which can. be carried out as funds permit. In the meanlime, however, it will be necessary to have an accurate topographical plan of the whole area, and Mr H. Roche, C.E., who is an enthusiastic lover of the beauties of nature, and is most anxious to make the most of the Domain, is to be entrusted with this work.

When the scheme has been conceived and planned, the Domain Board can then adopt some definite progressive programme, towards the consummation of which the board can, under the new Act, call, on the local bodies interested to render financial assistance.
