A Press Association wire states Mr John Marks, a settler of Kanieri, Hokitika, aged 101 years, died last evening.

The death- occurred at Hamilton yesterday of Mr Alfred Oswald Smith, a solicitor, aged 49 years. He had a very lengthy illness, following war service. Rev. W. A. Burley, M.A., of Thames, has been re-appointed chairman of the South Auckland District, Methodist Church, and Rev. Drake, chairman of the Auckland District.

The member for the district, Mr Fred Lye, has been informed by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom, that he will open the new bridge at Tahuna (Morrinsville district) on March Bth.

Lieut. F. Thomason is at present in Whangarei representing the local Fire Brigade at. the 51st annual conference of the United Fire Brigades' Association. .

Mr and Mrs H Riley have returned to Cambridge, and taken up residence in Grey Street. Mr and Mrs Riley were residents of this town for some considerable t.'n e, and have recently been at Morrinsville.

Miss Ellen Parker, of Cambridge, has been appointed to the teaching staff at Brain's Commercial College, Hamilton, aud will shortly take up her duties there. At present, Miss Parker is a member of the <taff of Messrs Bycroft and Cummack, Ltd.

Miss Dora Lewis leaves Cambridge to-day for Auckland, to avail herself of the University scholarship she recently secured. Miss Lewis was appointed probationary teacher at the Leamington school, but has resigned froiu that position in order to attend the University.

Mr F. R. Watters, town clerk at Cambridge, has left for the South Island,'where he will attend the conference of town clerks at Invcrcargill, and also the Municipal Conference. He will resume his duties here on the 10th inst. In the meantime, Miss Mary Attwood is acting town clerk.

As a result of a motoring mishap at Tauranga on Thursday afternobu, Mr C. E. Macmillan, M.P., had a small bone in his chest broken. He was attended to by a doctor and is confined to his home. Mr Macmillan had only just returned from a tour of portion of his electorate, on which he was accompanied by other members of Parliament.

The following appointments of Home Missionaries in the South Auckland district have been made by the Methodist Conference: Ngatea, Mr P. Dorian; W;aihi, Mr T. W. Featherstone; Te Kuiti, Mr J. C. W. Grindlcy; Putamru, Mr G. H. Marr; To Puke, Mr W. Sussex; Ngaruawahia, Mr G. Hall; Ohura, Mr E. R. Alexander; Coromandel, Mr O. P. Liddell; Otorohanga, Sister Rita.

Mr E. Veale is about to leave the district and take up residence at Tauranga. This gentleman has been one of the most prominent and valuable - residents of Cambridge for the past thirty years, and has been closely associated with many important local organisations. It is felt that some public recognition should be made of Mr Veale's services, and a public meotiug has been convened by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr W. G. Care) for Monday next, at 3 p.m., for the purpose of arranging a farewell to Mr Veale. We hope to see a large and representative gathering.
