ALLAN WILKIE COMPANY.

CAMBEIDGE—MONDAY NEXT.

The Cambridge public are exceedingly fortunate in having a visit from the world-famous Shakespearean Company, headed by Mr. Allan Wilkie, C.8.E., who will appear at the local Town Hall on Monday next, July Ist, when "The Merchant of Venice" will be presented. Mr. Wilkie is known throughout the world for his efforts to promote a love for Shakespearean 'plays, in which he has been exceedingly successful for a great many years. Since his tour of 1927 Mr. Wilkie has sought to make further improvements in his Shakespearean productions, and with that object has had beautiful and appropriate stage settings painted by a well-known Melbourne artist. Furthermore, an elaborate lighting plant is now travelled, based on the most up-todate Continental models, and permitting of most wonderful atmospheric effects. These factors, it. is claimed without fear of contradiction, combined with the strengthened cast of the Company, make the performances unequalled in point of finish and artistry by any Shakespearean productions ever staged previously in the Southern Hemisphere.

The play to be enacted at Cambridge, "The Merchant of Venice," is one of the very finest of the whole repertoire. The dramatic situations with which it abounds provide scope for superb acting, while the incomparable English of this play makes its presentation particularly fascinating and of great educational value. Every lover of Shakespeare, every student and cultured person should make a point of attending this play on Monday next. Cambridge .is indeed honoured in having a visit from such a Company, and we hope residents will show their appreciation by packing the Town Hall to the doors. The box plan is now open at Boyce's, and those Who intend to be present would be wise in booking seats early.

What a sensation she caused, especially in the heart of her Eoyal lover! "The Merry Widow," to be screened on Tuesday and Wednesday, starring. John Gilbert and Mae Murray, can never be forgotten.

Jack Townsend, handsome and champion pugilist, was confident of tho result when he accepted a professional wrestler's boast that he could boat any boxer if they were matched in a fight in which each contestant would use his own methods of defence, but he was unprepared for the turn of events which led to the theft of a valuable pendant and of his subsequent arrest on suspicion. He then realised that he had been "framed/' and it dawned upon him that "the snake in the grass" was no other than a jealous gentleman friend of the girl he loved, and that working in collusion, with him was tho boastful wrestler. How Townsend effected his escape from the custody of tho law and succeeded in proving the truth of his suspicions is vividly told in the thrilling drama. "The Body Punch,-' showing on Friday night. Together with}, the aforementioned picture will be screened Lefty Flynn in "O.U. West," a comedy which is well worth seeing.
