BURGLARY
AT MRS. HARTLY'S SHOP. SUM STOLEN FROM TILL. About 6.30 last evening a burglary was committed at Mrs. Hartly's shop in Lake Street, and a sum of between £6 and £7 was stolen from a till-in the confectionery department. At the time Mrs! Hartly was sitting in her sitting-room at the rear of the shop, when she heard a rustling of paper in the shop. Thinking a customer had entered, she went to the door leading into the shop and saw a youth crouched down by the counter. Realising that he had been observed, tho youth made a hurried exit from the shop with his head held down so that he could not be recognised by the proprietress. Mrs. Hartly hurried to the front of the shop and called out "Stop, thief!" As the thief ran down the street in the direction of the Town Hall, Mr. Edgar James, who was cycling home, came Tound the Queen Street corner. Hearing Mrs. Hartly's cry, he turned his cycle round and immediately gave chase, but by this time the youth was running across the street from the Town Hall, and in the darkness he got away. Had Mr. James- reached the intersection a moment or two earlier he would have been able to catch the thief. On going to the till Mrs. Hartly found that a sum in notes and silver to approximately the amount mentioned was missing. The police wore immediately notified, and were early on the scene, but so far no arrest has been made.
