WHITEHALL
SUCCESSFUL CONCERT f (From Our Own Correspondent). A very successful concert and dance wa s held at the Whitehall • School on Friday evening last, when ' there was the excellent attendance of fully 75 present. The concert programme in-., eluded songs and recitations by the schoolchildren, while the following items were rendered by other willing friends:—Song, "The Sunshine of Your £mile,"Mr J, Brunskill; violin solos, fiCavatina" and Scotch airs, Miss O. HcKenzie; duet, "The Rising of the Lark," Misses Sewell and Thclma Brunskill; song, "When Irish Eyes are Smiling," Mr W. Collins; humorous items were provided by Messrs J. Jeans., . C. £. Jeans, S. Brunskill, E. Morgan and D; Gilmour. The school children's items were capitally rendered and reflect much credit oh their teacher, Miss P. Sheppard. The ladies of the district provided an 'excellent supper, which was followed foy games and dancing. The dance mu-; sic was supplied by the Sewell brothers. The concert was a financial success, a collection being made in aid of the organ and library fund. Tennis Club. - On Saturday next at /noon the official opening of the district tennis club's senson will take place at the school courts. This season Mr W. Sewell is president; Mr Roy Dunning, vice-presi-dent, and Mr C. E. Jeans, secretary. ; The club has a membership of 27. The two sand courts at the school have been cleaned up and at present are in fair order. The prospects for an enjoyable and successful season are good* .'■ ~ General. The main Whitehall road has been given a chance during the recent spell / of fine weather and at present is in fair •order. . The Matamata County Council have not yet got to work on the metalling promised long long ago, nor have improvements recently promised been 7 started, despite; the repeated reminders ©f' the riding member, Mr J. Bruce. District residents are pleased that their riding member has been" successful in getting the council to replace the •wooden bridge over the road with a concrete culvert. It is to be hoped the job will be done yery soon, or ' the ;i bridge will fall to pieces. It is bordering on that stage now.
