EARLY MORNING FIRE.

AT WHAKAREWAREWA

TEA KIOSK DESTROYED.

ROTORUA, this day.

The Whakarcwarewa tea kiosk, an extensive building, was burned to the ground at five o'clock this morning. A heavy wind was blowing with torrential rain.

When the brigade arrived it was hopeless to try and save the building, and they concentrated on the surrounding dwellings which were effectively isolated.

The kiosk was owned by Nathan and Co., Auckland, and was leased by Mrs Donaldson, who used the structure for refreshments and dancing. The carved house adjoining ,was not damaged. The insurances are unknown.

It is announced that the Government has taken steps to relieve the unemployment position in Dunedin by providing immediate employment for 150 men. The Public Works Department will employ 120 men, mainly on road improvement work, and the Forestry Department will absorb 20. In addition to work being provided for the unemployed in Dunedin, the Public Works Department will engage 30 men at Invercargill on work for the Southland district.

Barton, who applied to the Scenery Preservation Board on behalf of Whakataki natives to have the Wharepouri ’s mark on the Whakataki Beach protected, has received a reply from the board to the effect that the spot is not considered of sufficient historical interest to. justify protection.
