ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS

LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. MANY EXCELLENT EFFORTS The exceedingly wintry conditions ruling lust night prevented many from attending the fortnightly meeting of the Cambridge Literary and Debating Society, but the twenty members who braved the elements were rewarded with an exceptionally interesting and informative programme, which comprised original contributions by members. The articles, of a widely diverse nature, were read by Mrs W. ,J. Ward, Miss Valerie Rowland, Messrs E. B. Kcmslcy and Frank Penn, the lastnamed being in charge of the arrangements for the evening. All of the items were well-written, many being of exceptional merit, and all present voted the programme one of the very best of the whole session. Following is a list of the contributions: —Article on “Conversation,” Mr C. W. Clark; two poems, “To My Cambridge Friends,” and “To a Child,” Rev. E. Lionel Harvie; Early History of Cambridge, Mrs W. -T. Ward; poem, “Shadows Glance,” Mrs S. Cowling; article on New Zealand Forest Trees, Mr S. R. James; essay, “The Chinese Situation,” Miss Valerie Rowland; biographical sketch of Bishop Octavius Hadficld, by “Pakeha”; ode to Cambridge, Rev. C. N. Lukcr; “Flowers and Friendship,” Mrs W. J. Ward; essay, “The Race Problem,” Mr Alywii Gascoigne; “Is Youth the Happiest Period of Life,” Mr C. W. Clark; “Fur Seals,” Anonymous. In discussion that followed, the excellence of the contributions was freely commented upon, and special pleasure was expressed at the very fine essays given by two of the junior members, Miss Valerie Rowland and Mr Alwyn Gascoigne. On the motion of the president (Mr S. R. James) a hearty vote of thanks was accorded all who had contributed to the enjoyment of the evening. MOCK PARLIAMENT. At next regular meeting of the society a Mock Parliament will be held, when the second reading of the Summer Time Bill will be debated. This promises to bo a specially attractive evening.
