THE GAMING BILL
PASSES THIRD READING TIIOTTTXO CLUB 'C CONGRATULATIONS. .Tim third rending of the Gaming Bill passed the House of Representatives at 2.120 a.m. yesterday, after several members had made a vigorous protest against certain provisions of the Bill. An amendment by Mr Parry .to insert provisions* for guarding the lives and limbs of jockeys, restricting the size, of fields, etc.. was negatived by 40 to 24. Several members expressed indignation at Ministerial references to "sinister influences" behind the opposition to the Bill.
The Legislative Council pased the Bill without, amendment.
A few days ago Mr Walter StOpford (secretary of the Cambridge Trotting Club) sent telegrams, on behalf of the "flub, to the Prime Minister, Hon. If. F. Bollard', Messrs ,T. A. Young and F. Lye, M's.r.. congratulating them on the second reading of the Gaming Bill, and thanking them for their efforts in that direction.
Replies have been received from all l hese gentlemen, acknowledging receipt of the messages, with thanks, and expressing appreciation of the congratulatory messages.
