BOOKMAKING CHARGES. HEAVY FIXES INFLICTED. (By Telegfonh—Press Association) AUCKLAND, this day. Two heavy fines, one of £4OO and another of £3Qo,..were imposed in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday by Mr J. W.'Poynton, S.M., on men charged with bookmaking. Wm. Geo. Brown, 44 years of age, pleaded guilty to a. charge.. Mr M. Frear, counsol for accused, said the latter had a business which was not doing too well. He had never been before the Court before. Chief Detective Cummings, in reply to counsel, said that he had no eomplaints about Brown's bookmaking activities. He had known accuised for 10 years, and apart from being a bookmaker accused had a good character. Brown was finod £3OO, in months,' imprisonment, Joseph Geo. ReOs, 49 years of age, who had been convicted bofore, was fined £4OO, in default 18 months' imprisonment. In each ease a week was allowed in which to pay the fine.

Speaking at a complimentary banquet to the Hon. C. J. Parr, Mr Massey said the moratorium ends on December 31st, and he was going to ask Parliament to amond the law so that a borrower might go to the Supreme .Court, state his case, and ask tho Judge to look into it. If the Judge thought a, mortgagor had a chance to recover he would make arrangements for the carrying on of the mortgage for two years, but. not. longer. He could not bolieve there was going to be the trouble some people talked about. The security of broad acres was just as good as ever it was. He knew mistakes were made dui*ing tho boom period, but as the 1914 legislation enabled a mortgagee to apply for exemption, so he proposed legislation should be just turned around the other way. BUSH FATALITY. KILLED BY FALLING TREE. (By Telegraph—Press Association) THAMES, Monday. An inquest was held at Patetonga on Sunday concerning the death of 'Emmerich Terence Thomas Potoky, who was killed on Friday by a tree, which he was cutting down, falling on him. The Coroner's finding was that death was. due to accidental causes. ANOTHER SHOT-GUN ACCIDENT. TEACHER BADLY INJURED. (By Telepranh—Pr*>ss Association WHAKATANE, Saturday. A serious shooting accident happened at. Otakiri, about 17 miles from, Whakatanc, late on Friday afternoon. Mr Kenneth Brown, the local schoolmaster, had been out shooting hares, and was returning to his lodgings about dusk when he had occasion to get through a wire fence. Apparently he endeavoured to pull his gun after him by the barrel. The weapon exploded and discharged the wad and shot into his loft side just below the heart, inflicting a large wound. Fortunately the lungs were not injured, and Dr Cronin of the local hospital has hopes for the. injured man's recovery. UNDIMMED LIGHTS. HAMILTON MOTORIST FINED. The first case of failing to dim the lights of a motor when approaching another ear was heard yesterday, when Stanley Jenkinson was fined £1 costs. BLAZE AT INVERCARGILL. IMPERIAL OIL STORE DESTROYED (By Telegraph—Press INVERCARGILL, this day. The British Imperial Oil Company's big oil bond store went, up in smoke last evening. There were at least 200,000 cases of oil stored in the building. The buildings and contents were covered by an opon policy of insurance, but the amount of damage covered is not yet known. - <•
