||j ANNUAL DINNER. IK-> ENJOYABLE function. ' Following the usual custom of tho Cambridge Defence Rifle Club, prior to the annual meeting, several members and guests partook of dinner at the. Central Hotel on Saturday evening : Jast; The President of the Club XMr/'RiFeisstj occupied the chair and the following Club members and guests were present: —Messrs. F. Lye, M.P., J. Bruce, B. Simpson, H. D. Dallimore, E. M. Dallimore, W. Moore, P. Keelcy, 'A. Clark, Gibson, W. Reed, T. Bluck, S. S. Alford, E. C. Wallis, W. Harris, 'A. E. Hilli L. Webber, E. James and V. <G. Bouli^y. ! Tho dining table was excellently arranged and a most sumptuous repast had-been prepared by Mr. and Mrs •Dunm'or'e. After full justice had been done a toast list was heartily honoured. The compliment to the King having been paid, the president of the Club proposed the health of the district member (Mr F. Lye, M.P.) and in so (doing referred to the willingness of thg inembor to undertake the many minor duties that the district called upon him to perform. Mr Lye had proved him* self a live representative, and it was 6 matter for the appreciation of the •whole of the constituents that their member took such a serious view of his •9uties to the district. The president lieartily welcomed Mr Lye and assured "him he was voicing the feelings of the •entire Club. (Applause). In responding Mr Lye said he realis<ed he was representing one of the finest districts in the Dominion. He" appreciated the fact that the productivity and prosperity of the Waikato placed it in the fore of the Dominion, and it would be his endeavour to prove worthy of the confidence placed in him by the people of the constituency. Continuing the member touched briefly on party polities and sectional interest, but it would be his endeavour to place country first and party next at all times. In proposing the toast of "Rifle Shooting," Mr Lye referred to the great national benefit accruing, from such: an organisation throughout. the Dominion. He briefly referred to the strained relationship of America and Japan as a result of the American exclusion laws, and the possibility of such as the basi.* upon. which another great war may rust. The speaker contended that the Japanese, however", had no af■grument on their side, for even stricter jexelusion laws were obtaining m Japan, where it was impossible for a foroigrior to get a freehold title on land. In the speaker's opinion the source of the present trouble was due to two factors — Japan resented*America's interference with her policy Of interest in the internal management of Chinese affairs, and a|so t that Japan has a popu-haS-^WndT 1 ' elbow robm'" somewhere. Mr Lye followed up his line of argument with the view that Singapore as a British naval base was absolutely essential, and if nothing was done in this matter Britain would possibly regret it

Feisst) presiding, there being a good attendance of members. Belt Championship. A lengthy discussion was keld over the above subject., the president explaining that owing to the wet weather it had been impossible to complete the second round at the 500 and 600 yards ranges, and in deference to the wishes of fhe Defence Department the Glub were at present unable to uso these longer ranges. Finally it was decided on the motion of Rfm. W. Moore that a further shoot of 20 shots take place at the 300 yards Tange, to be counted with the better of the two short range scores already completed. It has been since decided to hold the above shoot on Saturday week, weather permitting.. Report and Balance Sheet. The report, which .appears an another page of this issue, and the balance as follows were passed as read, the secretary M. Dallimore) receiving commendation for the favourable position of the Club. Balance Sheet. The balance on the general account showed receipts £62 0/8, the principal items being: Balance 31/5/23, £24 12/2; ammunition £lB 15/9, and subscriptions £ll 10/6. The year's expenditure totalled £4B 7/10, lea.ving a credit balance of £l3 12/10. The Club have also a ' of assets over liabilities valued »t £34 ;7/l. The ammunition account

disclosed a balance of £l3 0/3 value of ammunition in hand. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr F. Lye, M.P.; president, Mr J. Bruce; deputy president, Mr B. Feisst; vice-president, Mr E. C. Wallis; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. M. Dallimore; committee, Messrs G. Simpson, R. S. Alford, W. Moore, W. Harbutt, L. Webber and officors ox officio. Handicapping committee, Messrs ,A. Clark, H. M. Dallimore and G. Simpson. Bank Account. It was resolved to transfer the account to the post offiee, the president and secretary to have power to operate upon same. l The range limits for the present-year will remain the same as last. . The subscription to the Club was fixed at 10/6 for senior members arid 5/ for juniors. The meeting resolved that the belt championship conditions be held over to a later meeting. Belt Aggregate Trophies, It was decided that five prizes be given for the five highest scotcs off the rifle over actual bolt scores. Trophy shoots will be held on similar conditions to last year, the prosident, deputy president, and secretary to arrange matter of trophies. Thanks. The thanks of the Club were tendered doflofs of trophies to the Club during the past year, and to the outgoing officials. , i
