SWIMMING

SCHOOL CHILDREN’S CERTIFICATES.

130 CHILDREN QUALIFY LOCALLY

During the past yoar 5388 certificates were issuod by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to school children who had been taught to swim efficiently over distances from 50 yards to a mile, and it was expoetod that 6000 certificates would be issued during the current year.

This is a splendid achievement of which the Swimming Association and all directly interested may justly feel proud. It is to be hoped that the Government subsidies which have been granted to Swimming Clubs throughout the Dominion that have taken up the tuition of school children during the past two seasons will be continued.

The value of sueh tuition and the results. obtained are a fitting testimony for the continuation of this most important portion of a child’s education. It is pleasing to know that the local Club has contributed well towards the success of the year’s operations, and it is doubtful if any other country Club has obtained such excellent results. During the past year the local Club employed an instructor throughout the season, and the result has been that 130 children have secured certificates, 80 of which were for 50yds distance, and the remainder for various distances ;ip to one mile. Last season the Club received a Government grant of £2O, and this, together with tho fees received, has just paid expenses in connection with the tuition.
