WATER FOR BOWLING

ANNUAL MEETING DISCUSSION. ACCOUNT! HELD IN - ABEYANCE. The matter of the account for water received from the Borough Council was brought forward by a member at the annual meeting of the Cambridge Bowling Club on Tuesday evening last. Mr J. Hooker asked would it not bo possible to get a flat rate? The account of £22 for water consumed by the Bowling Club he considered unreasonable. The speaker said he had also noticed that it was regarded by the Domain Board that the conveniences in the Domain were at the free use of the, Club: but were they not public, and consequently open to the public at all hours! Mr 8. Cowling considered that the Bowling Club, with its appointments, was a great asset to the town and it was up to the Council to assist the Club, even if they gave the Club water for nothing. At this stage a resolution was brought forward that the account be held in abeyance until the Council were prepared to make a more reasonable allocation of the Club's share of water used. Mr T. F. Richards opposed the resolution, and said he thought the Bowling Club should have approached the Council in a. more gentlemanly manner. There had never been a deputation to the Council from the Bowling Club in connection with the matter, which was really one for consideration between the Club and the Domain Board. The speaker felt sure had the Bowling Club approached the Council in a more reasonable way the matter would have been dealt with in a manner satisfactory to all concerned. The secretary of the. Bowling Club (Mr Edgar James) said he was rather surprised at the assertions made by Mr Richards. The Bowling Club a previous year paid £(5 18/(5 for water, but as later accounts had fluctuated the Club had applied to be charged on a flat rate at £7 per year. The Council offered to accept £B, but the Club thought, this too high and wrote to that effect. About three months lapsed after this last correspondence and at a Council meeting the speaker had asked, with permission, what the Council had done in the matter. The ' Mayor thereupon moved a resolution that Cr Richards and himself gO into the .matter. The outcome of this action was that the Bowling Club received an account for £22 for 177,000 gallons of water. Thus the present attitude of tlie Bowling Club is as stated iir the resolution passed at the annual meeting on Tuesday night as aforementioned. The resolution to the effect that the account be held in abeyance was carried.
