COUNCIL MEETING j i i The Juno meeting of the Cambridge | Borough Council was held in the Conn- | cil Chamber last evening. Present : | Ilis Worship the Mayor (Mr C. 11. ; Priestley), and Crs. A. Wilkinson, W. Moore, A. 11. Gascoigne, T. Kelly, 11. Alan Bell, Me.rvyn Wells, 'l. I\ liicliards and P. P. Glanville. Taxi Stand A deputation (Messrs Douce and Linstrom) representing the taxi-drivers waited upon the Council. asking them to re-eonsider their decision to alter the position of the taxi-stand from Victoria Street to Umpire Street. Mr Donee stated Empire Street was too narrow, there being hardly room to turn. The Mayor said the position had been altered in accordance with the By-laws, and they could not go back on their decision. The By-laws had been advertised open for inspection, and no objection had been made. When the stand was in Victoria Street, the taxis blocked the frontage of the shops and customers’ cars had to pull up behind them. ' The matter was left to the Mayor to arrange with the taxi-drivers. Water Connection Mr R. Lyons wrote stating that, he had bought a piece of land from Mr McFarlane, who had told him that if he paid half his water rates he would supply him with water. The writer was ignorant of the fact that he' had to obtain the permission of the Council to be supplied with water, until he had been notified by the Borough foreman. He now asked for the Council's consent. It was pointed out that this man wnsg outside the Borough boundary, and the. old Council had refused to grant, permission. The Mayor also drew the attention of the Council to a resolution passed that no new connections be j made, and the application was turned J down. Town Hail Improvements Mr 8. Lewis wrote, referring to the lack of sufficient fire-escapes from the Town Hall gallery, and urging that the Council push on with the improvements to the gallery at once. Several Councillors spoke of the urgency of this work, but it was decided nothing could bo done until the. question of loans was gone into. Late Town Clerk’s Claim The late Town Clerk (Mr .T. W. Cocks') presented claims for special services rendered to the Council, totalling CLMd 1 .‘i/V He stated his claim had boon turned down by the old Council, but he asked that it be re-considered. Mr Cocks mentioned the expense he had saved the Council during Mr Ansel)’s absence in hospital, and in connection with the By-laws. Or Wilkinson moved that the matter be not. discussed. Cr Bell moved an amendment that the matter be further dismissed after the Power Board’s report on the expense of putting the books in order is - received. Cr Bell said Mr Cocks had 1 rendered the Council valuable services : in many ways. 1 Cr Gascoigne seconded Cr Bell’s amendment, stating lie was very svm- ( pathetic towards Mr Cocks, and he 1 would support his claim, although not 1 to the extent asked for. He claimed the action of the late Council in raising the tariff 50 per cent was not right. On account of tire increase of £7 they had been forced to hold their show in the Presbyterian Hall last year.

Tlio Mayor and several Councillors expressed themselves as sympathetic with the application. Tlie following reports of Committee meetings were adopted bv the Council: Works committee Messrs Linot.t and Co., Ltd., wrote offering rat poison.—The Town Clerk was instructed to procure* a small quantity of poison locally and to distribute same to any ratepayers requiring any. A letter was received from the Department of Agriculture, stating they would be only too pleased to send an officer to confer with the Committee regarding the proposed site of the Abbaroir.—ft was decided that the Committee visit Messrs Coates and Cods slaughterhouse while on their four of inspection. Messrs Winstono Ltd. wrote quoting prices for coal. —'ft? Town Clerk, was instructed to order !>0 tons.

Mr F. Vcale wrote rc the Te Miro nu't;il quarry, asking the Council to sirrange a date to meet the Cambridge Road Board.—The Town Clerk was instructed to arrange a suitable date. A meeting of the Works Committee was arranged for 19th inst., to make a tour of inspection of the Borough and vo consider a report on the High Level Bridge. Legal and Finance Air F. C. Wood wrote offering sections. —The sections are to be inspected by the Mayor and Crs. Richards and Glanville. Cr Wilkinson, His Worship tlj or and the Town Clerk were a sub-committee to deal with all ing permits. The secretary of the Y.M.C.A. asked that the general rate and penalty on same owing by the Board be remitted. —Decided that request be granted. Cr Wells was appointed to enquire into rhe high valuation of the Borough. Mr D. .T. London wrote rc Borough solicitorsliip. Cr Wells moved that Mr London be appointed.—This lapsed and an amendment that the work be allocated at the discretion of the Council also lapsed. It. was finally decided that the matter be left in the hands of the Fnance Committee. It was decided to raise Miss Dick’s salary to 50/ per week, the matter to be brought before the Council in three months.

A discussion took place on the section in the Finance Committee’s report in reference to the remittance of rates to the Y.M.C.A., Cr Wilkinson objecting and moving an amendment that the amount of remission be paid by the Councillors. The decision of the Committee was, however, allowed to stand. Borough Solicitorship A discussion also took place in refer? once to the Borough solicitorship, referred to iu the Finance Committee report. Cr Wells moved an amendment to this section, that Mr D. .1. Lundon be appointed Borough solicitor, for the reason that he was a young man and a returned soldier. The amendment was seconded by Cr Moore. Cr Gascoigne thought the past arrangement of dividing the work was satisfactory. When a man made a sacrifice to take up civic work, lie should not be debarred from receiving his share of the outside work. Cr Bell said both Messrs Lewis and Dalliniore and Mr Gascoigne had had the work in the past and Mr Lundon had not, and he thought it only fair to give him a turn. After discussion tin 1 amendment that Mr Lundon be appointed was carried.
