ORPHANS' CLUB

THURSDAY'S MEETING 'j j A GOOD GATHERING Owing to the exceedingly wintry weather experienced on Thursday night, the attendance at the Orphans' Club meeting was not sff large as usual, but over thirty brethren assembled and spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Bro. A. H. Hodgson (vice-president) occupied the chair for the evening, and conducted the business in excellent style. During the evening the Orphans' Orchestra, under Mr M. P. McDerraott, provided a number of selections in fine style, every item being much appreciated. Bro. Alt' Cade, of Hamilton, was among thoso present, and most generously provided quite a number of items His songs all elicited double encores, while the same flattering reception was given to Mr Cade for his recitation. This gentleman is a musical and elocutionary artist of exceptional abilities, and his versatility was shown by the wide variety of selections given including classical and humorous songs, character sketches, and humorous recitations in all of which Mr Cade acquitted himself admirably, to the intense enjoyment of all present. Community singing, with orchestral accompaniment, under the able direction of Bro. Rev. Mortimer Jones, went.with a good swing, making a pleasing portion of the programme. Bro. Smales contributed a humorous reading, and Bro. W. H. Reed read an extract from Dennis' works, both items being encored. Supper was served in good style, and altogether the gathering was a pronounced success.
