TIMBER INDUSTRY

S.P.N.D. MILLS FIRST-CLASS RIMU OUTPUT During the last week, or two the first consignments of rimu timber from the S.P.N.D. sawmill at Te Miro 'have com e forward to the firm’s Cambridge timber yards. An Independent representative inspected some of this timber yesterday, and found that it was of excellent quality, being that beautiful rich red mountain timber so sop&ht after for joinery, /cabinet-making, etc. S.P.N.D., Ltd., j have purchased a big stretch of bustl at JJJc Miro from the Government —aHrkrtik which it is anticipated, will yield anything from three to four million feet of timber. The great bulk of this is first-class rimu, though there is also a fair quantity of mangaco, which is also very valuable. The rimu bush is remarkably fine. Many of tho trees are from six to eight feet, in diameter, and the trees run up to 80 feet in the barrel. Those well qualified to express an opinion are very pleased with the timber. The output of tho Tc Miro mill, which is situated some nine miles from Cambridge, is about 5000 feet per day, and it is expected that this will be steadily maintained. There are some seventeen men employed at the mill, the wages for which run into quite a respectable sum, and help to stimulate the business life of Cambridge. The Tc Miro mill is the only rimu sawmill in the Waikato, we understand and supplies a long-felt want in the entire district, as this class of timber is one of the best for all-round general use. CAMBRIDGE MILLS Tho firm’s Cambridge mills are kept steadily employed cutting pinus insignia, mostly in fulfilment of extensive contracts secured by the proprietary. A large staff of workmen is regularly employed here, and the mills are always a hive of industry one of our biggest local industrial concerns, that circulates a large amount of money in wages. In addition to the. ordinary breaking-down and circular saw benches, planing machines are .used, in fact S.P.N.D. are in a position to undertake all classes of work in connection with the timber industry, from the felling of the standing bush to the erection of up-to-date residences and other buildings. JOINERY DEPARTMENT The joinery department is worthy of special mention. This branch of the works keeps a good staff of skilled workmen regularly employed, and the work executed is of a very high grade, and a distinct credit to the workmen, their employers, and the district. All classes of joinery are turned out to suit every diass of building, from tho humblest to the most palatial. Our representative was specially struck with the extremely handsome modern mantelpieces, of unique and artistic design, turned out by the firm. Theso are really very beautiful, and compare favourably with the very fcpst to be obtained anywhere in the Dominion. Seeing that the firm has expert tradesmen, the best of machinery, ample well-seasoned timber and other material, there is no reason why it should not. turn out good work, and S.P.N.D. ’s joinery department is recognised as one of the finest in South Auckland.
