CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A meeting of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce was hold in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr G. H. Wallace) presided over a fair attendance of members.

A considerable amount of discussion took place in connection with the Chamber’s proposal to form a branch of the Good Eoads Association in Cambridge. However, the matter was hold in abeyance until data had been supplied by Mr Hemingway. The President spoke at length upon the recent Mayoral statement published in the local press. He congratulated the Mayor upon the lucid and exhaustive report he had compiled. A round the table talk on railway matters ensued. It was resolved to invite Mr Stubbing to attend the next mooting of the Chamber to discuss the matter of surveys in connection with the proposed extension of the Cambridge line. It was felt- that now the proposed Te Awamutu extension to Putaruru is coming prominently before the public, we should be alive in railway matters in Cambridge. It may be possible to assist the To Awamutu scheme and link up with it from Cambridge. At anyrate the Chamber feels that the “dead end*” policy of past railway authorities must not be allowed to indefinitely continue. It is quite possible that a strong railway league will bo formed in this town at the close of the war.

The President made a few remarks on the Waikato Winter Show. He stated that as a district advertisement this fine show in Hamiltedn stood alone and other towns and districts in the Waikato benefited as a result of the show. Ho strongly deprecated anything of a parochial nature in connection with this Winter Show and said that a leading article in the Waikato “Times'’ inferred that some parochialism had existed somewhere. He felt, however, that the inference was not levelled at Cambridge district, as no place in the Waikato was more loyal to the Winter Show. A resolution was passed by the Chamber that the secretary write to the Executive of the Waikato Winter Show conveying the hearty congratulations of the Chamber on the success attained.
