Hautapu Drainage Board

The above Board met at Cambridge ou (Saturday, there being present:Messrs W. J. Andrews (chairman), li. Jyler, J. W, Bartlett, J. Christie ami M. L. Watkins. The chief business was to receive tenders for cleaning out the drains of the district and deal with the same. The total length of the drains , for which tenders were called is 17 miles and 21 chains, and comprised the following:— A drain, from its junction with the Eureka drain to Captain Sleddon's boundary, 893 chains; A. 1., a branch of the above through Simpson and Jamieson's properties, 88 chains; 8., the lower portion of the drain from Matangi to Victoria Eoad, 366 chains; the upper portion of the same drain, from the Victoria Eoad to Sleddon’s, 124 chains; 8.2, from Matangi across the railway and through Grey Bros, and Bartlett Bros.' property, ■ 127 chains; C. From Bnmtwood to Swayne’s culvert of the Pencourt Road, 253 chains. Most of those tendering evidently wanted the lor or none, for they gave a uniform price for each drain. J. Keeley asked 3/6 per chain; C R. Stanley required 3/2; J. Moras wanted 2/8, at which price he secured all but the 8.2 and C., and they went to T. G. Rawlings at 1/6 and 2/3 respectively. The only other tender recevied was W. Manakau for the C. drain, and he asked 2/11 per chain. A deputation consisting of Messrs Le Martin and Calisou waited upon the Board with reference to the latter taking a portion of land at the south 'western side of the Hautapu Drainage district into it. There are about half a dozen interested ia the project, and the matter was brought before the Board at the previous meeting, but it was found that one of them, who owned land at what would be the outfall of the drain, objected to its being made, and consequently the Board would not entertain the matter. The . deputation said the interested parties had now come to an amicable understanding, for a duly qualified civil engineer had taken the levels of the proposed drain, and found that the natural flow of the water was through the land of the one who previously objected, and now he had given his consent under certain conditions which the others had agreed to. After some discussion a committee, consisting of the chairman, Messrs Bartlett and Tyler, was appointed to go thoroughly into the matter and report at the next meeting.
