THE PRESENT CAMBRIDGE BRIDGE.

(to the editor.) Sir,— As many people in this district are of the opinion * that the present safety of the bridge is owing to the strengthing operations that have recently been considered necessary, it is only fair to the professional reputation of a gentleman that the facts should be known. During one of his visits to Cambridge, some twelve months or more since Mr Fulton, engineer of the high level bridge was requested by the Borough Council to examine and report as to the condition of the bridge. His report was to the effect that the bridge was safe for several years. Now, seeing that the strengthening operations at the time of the flood were not sufficiently advanced to strengthen the bridge in the slightest degree, the fact remains, in spite of all reports to the contrary, that Mr Fulton’s opinion was correct, and that has been strikingly shown by the way the bridge has stood the test of the recent flood.— I am, etc., ■Walter Crisp. Fencourt, Jan. 19, 1907.
