WAIKATO LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The adjourned meeting of the above was held at Hamilton Courthouse at noon yesterday. Present: Messrs G. Edgecumbe (who presided, in the absence of Mr H. W. Northcroft, S.M,), J. A. Young, J. R. S. Richardson, J. D. Melville and W. Dey. THE CAMBRIDGE HOTELS. The National (Mr W. H. Mackenzie, licensee). —It was reported that the renovations to this building were about completed, and it was decided to grant the license for the premises. The Criterion.—The police reported that the alterations and additions to this hotel would not be completed for a couple of months. Mr A. J. Edmunds appeared for the owner, Mr Alf. Underwood,. and asked that a renewal of the license should be granted. He said the delat in completing the alterations, etc., to the building was due to the fact that his client, who owned the freehold of the premises, was having a great deal more work carried out at the hotel than was ordered by the Committee. Mr Underwood was determined to make the premises as up-to-date as possible, and was expending about £2OOO (which counsel pointed out was not brewers’ money) in alterations and additions to the building. Messrs Young and Richardson, who had inspected the premises, said they were satisfied with the progress made in carrying out the alterations to the building. The committee decided to adjourn the granting of the license till the sitting in March. In the meantime a permit would be granted without prejudice. Masonic.—The police reported the work ordered to be carried out by the committee at this hotel was not being proceeded with so satisfactorily as it should be, and very little progress had been made since the last meeting of the committee. Mr H, Gillies appeared for the owner of the hotel (Mr V. Cornago), and Mr A. J. Edmunds for the licensee (Mr J. Sinclair). Mr Gillies said that owing to the dislocation of railway traffic his client was unable to be present, and he asked that the application for the renewal of the license be dealt with in the same way as the preceding case. Mr Edmunds said his client was anxious to get out of the hotel, and Mr Bygraves, the new tenant, was waiting to take possession. Mr Young said there was a dispute between the owner and Mr Sinclair, and that had caused delay in pushing on with the repairs. Mr Andrew White, contractor for painting and re-papering the premises, said he thought the work would be completed by Saturday week. He, had been hampered owing to the scarcity of labor and to the wages demanded by Trades’ Unionists. The application was adjourned till the March sitting. TE AWAMUTU HOTELS. Mr Jackson was granted a renewal and the application of Mr J. Bathurst (Commercial Hotel) was adjourned till March.

OHAUPO RACES. The conditional license for the above was extended till Wednesday next.
