THE NEW ELECTORATES.

The question of the new electoral boundaries was brought up at the meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evening. Mr 0. C. Bucldand did not think the fact of Cambridge being cut off from the Waikato electorate and put into the new Tauranga electorate was a very serious matter to the town. The Representation Commissioners had gone on a population basis, and that accounted for Cambridge being included in a new electorate. A great deal, he thought, depended on the member returned for the seat, and it behoved them to run a strong man at next election.

The President said he did not think a protest from this end would be of any avail. It would perhaps mean altering the boundaries of other electorates, and then it might be a case of “ out of the frying-pan into the fire ” so far as this part was concerned. Cambridge’s interests must necessarily be overshadowed by Hamilton, and it was perhaps just as well that we were cut off from them, as we could not expect much help in anything from Hamilton. He thought they could always depend upon getting assistance from any member representing the Waikato, as he never knew w’hen the electorates would be re-cast, and would be compelled to again make a bid for the support of voters here. Appreciative reference was made to the energetic manner in which Mr Greenslade had looked after the wants of the district. One or two speakers said there was a large number of voters in this part of the new electorate, and the member returned would have to see that our interests were carefully looked after if he wished to retain the support of the local electors.
