WINTER SHOWS.

TO THE EDITOR,

Sir, —Your leading article of Monday deals \yifch a matter of great interest and importance to the agriculturists of the Waikato. This district is essentially a root producing and dairying area, and should be able to more than hold its own with any part of the Auckland province in the matter of exhibits for a winter ehow. That such shows are useful and instructive is generally admitted, the whole question resolves itself into one of expediency. Would a provincial show held in Auckland best serve the interests of the producers, or would it be better to hold several district shows in the localities where the production takes place ? There is undoubtedly a good deal to be said for both views. The city show would have the effect of concentrating the best productions of the whole province, and thus afford opportunity for comparison and competition. The city also would be in a better position with regard to building accommodation and matters of that kind. On the other hand, if district shows were held the expense of transit would be greatly reduced, the districts would receive the benefit of the expenditure necessary to carry out the show, as well as the benefit of the large number of visitors that would necessarily come into the locality. With regard to the Waikato, your suggestion that shows should be held alternately by the Waikato Agricultural Association at Hamilton, and the Waikato Central at Cambridge, is undoubtedly a wise one, as this arrangement would secure the hearty co-operation of the whole district and would undoubtedly result in a strong representative exhibition.

The subject is one worthy of the best consideration of our Associations, and no time should be lost in having the matter fully discussed and got under way so as to be in good time for next winter.—l am, etc.,
