MURDERED BY REQUEST.

A crime of a remarkable character took place on a recent Sunday at St. Pierre (France), when the mayor of that town, M. Canton, killed his wife with a hatchet at the woman’s own and earnest request. For a long time past the woman has suffered great pain from a cancer, and has'repeatedly, in the presence of various people, implored her husband to put her out of her misery by killing her. It is stated that she had several times attempted to take her own life. One Sunday, during the absence of the servant, it is supposed that the mayor was again implored by his wife to end her sufferings, for when the servant returned the woman was dead, killed by several blows of a hatchet.

M. Canton directed the servant to go for the police, and on their arrival was arrested and conducted to prison. He has expressed no regret at the terrible deed.

He was elected Mayor of St. Pierre years ago, and was highly esteemed by his fellow townsmen.
