The Eveleigh "Hold Up"
SHEETING IT HOME. Received 0.50 a.m., 23rd. Sydney, July 23. In connection with the Eveleigh "hold up" charges. the woman Kelly, who was arrested with Ryan in Melbourne, gave evidence that about the time of the robbery she was frequently in the company of Ryan and Freeman in Sydney. Ryan had plenty of money and presented her with considerable sums of money and 'jewellery, and other valuable articles. They had a champagne supper, and Ryan then departed for Melbourne, she subsequently joining him there. He told her that he intended to stay there a short time and then go to America, adding that she need never want, and could have money to burn. In Melbourne Kyan met Faiknor and other men. He handed over to one of them a bundle of £5 notes; another bundlawas put ii; a jar behind the fireplace where tshe and Ryan were staying, the police afterwards discovering them. When the police came to arrest Kyan, he jumped out of bed and seized an automatic pistol. She advised him not to shoot as it would only make things worse, and he did not attempt to shoot. On the way to Sydney, while under arrest, Ryan told her to tell the truth.
Amongst the letters found in the house where Ryan was arrested and which were identified as being in his handwriting, was one to a man, Brown, stating that he had received a call from another quarter and it
"looked like a cake-walk for a nice little roll, running into four figures." Another letter was to Falkner, stating that Kyan was sending a parcel of goods, and asking him to keep it intact until he (Kyan) arrived, adding "Yo'i can guess what the contents will be."
